Have Walled Gardens Killed the Personal Computer?
I got both of these from Slashdot, where I get a lot of good stuff. Here’s the scoop on Zittrain:
The following op-ed by Harvard Law School Professor Jonathan Zittrain appeared in the Nov. 30 edition of the Technology Review. [Click here for audio.]
In addition to his HLS professorship, Zittrain is faculty co-director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. He is also a professor of law at the Harvard Kennedy School, and professor of computer science at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Zittrain is the author of the 2008 book “The Future of the Internet—And How To Stop It.”
Yes, there are some smart cookies out there. They know what is going on, and are screaming about it as loudly as they can. But their screams are falling on deaf ears. They want to save the world – but the world does not want to be saved.
To put this another way – something else is in power, and it is not us. And whatever it is, we do not want to know about it. We don’t want to be involved in running our own world – and are happy to let others do that for us.
