Business
This has been the curse of my life as long as I can remember – because its baleful influence began before I was born. And no doubt will last beyond my death.
You will be asking me “What on earth are you talking about here? I don’t see anything so terrible going on. You seem to be suffering from some kind of paranoid delusion!”
I am paranoid, no question about that – but I am not delusional. The bad guys are out there – and they are running the world. Because they are running the businesses of the world. Or, to expand our view of things – the Global Economy. Which includes everything.
I spoke earlier of a baleful influence – a clever choice of words. But now I must clarify that. The forces that be did not set out to be the way they turned out. They had the best of intentions, I am sure. But somehow things turned out badly. And they became the victims of forces beyond their comprehension.
Very rich and very powerful victims, as it turned out. With all kinds of people eager to serve them. Not a bad place to be in – if you don’t mind being inhuman. Which most people do not seem to mind at all.
As always seems to happen – plenty of other people are having the same insight. As I, Cringely’s posting this morning IBM back in the USSR? I quote:
—-
As more people read my book and come to understand not just the house of cards that IBM has become but that it’s just an extreme example of what’s happening all over American big business
—-
And, if he stopped to think about it – global big business. Which is Americanism writ large.
The Tico Times wrote:

President Luis Guillermo Solís ended his whirlwind foreign tour of the United States Friday after meeting with U.S. senators, representatives from the Organization of American States, members of the news media and potential investors.

One of these potential investors was Intel, who agreed to open a new division here – after closing down another, larger, division – and moving it to somewhere where labor was cheaper.
It did not occur to El Presidente that he instinctively aligned himself with the US – including its drug policies. What’s good for America, he feels, is good for the World.
So far, this assumption has served Costa Rica well. It is the only country in Central America that has not been invaded by the American military. Nicaragua, by contrast, has been invaded six times. It has taken great care to not offend American companies – such as the Banana companies. A mistake that lead to the desperate situation Guatemala is now in.
It is part of the American economy – and, as result, has the strongest economy in Central America.
How much longer this can last is anybody’s guess.
