What do I Remember of LBJ?

Practically nothing.

At the time, we were obsessed with the Cold War. I was an Electronic Engineer in that war, and worked for the Army, the AirForce (twice) and the Navy. We didn’t accomplish anything, we just wasted money – but the pay was wonderful! We won that war, because we could waste more money than the Soviets.

I am now reading Prisoners of Hope: Lyndon B. Johnson, the Great Society, and the Limits of Liberalism – and about the Civil Rights legislation that he was responsible for. This was an amazing achievement – one that he gets full credit for. He had the best rapport with Congress of any president. And was not shy about applying pressure – in person, wherever needed.

He was crude – a hillbilly from the poorest part of Texas – but he had high ideals. Some would say – too high.

He would be remembered as one of our great presidents – except for Vietnam.
