Americans and Education

Americans think highly of themselves – in their eyes, they are demigods. But an impartial observer would see them differently.

To put this another way – their conscious beliefs differ fundamentally from their unconscious ones.

And this is true of their attitudes toward Education. They say the nicest things about it anyone could possibly say – but then stab it in the back. Ask any teacher.

I noticed this when I entered High School in 1950. Grade School hadn’t been too bad – but High School was Hell. I wan’t the only one to notice this – everyone in my family did. I even wrote about it in Abolish High School – where I linked to an article in Harper’s Magazine.
