I just downloaded The Human Comedy: Selected Stories – by Balzac. And just finished reading the Introduction – by Peter Brooks. Kindle books are a luxury I can afford.
This fills big hole in my understanding of French Literature, and French History. Balzac compared French politics to the British – and noted its shortcomings.
But now the British have thrown away their advantage! Has the whole world has gone insane?
But then I get a grip on myself – and ask a better question “What forces have overwhelmed us?”
Balzac is of some help here – he could see the effects of Capitalism and Industrialization on the horizon – and he didn’t like the looks of them.
