The Biggest Problem of Them All

Heavens knows we have plenty of them – but I keep asking myself what the worst one is. And the answer is clear – it is our attitude towards people. We hate them.

At this point, you probably think I have taken leave of my senses. But bear with me awhile longer. I must clarify what I mean by “we”. I mean the great mass of people, who, in their opinion – have become superhuman. These first appeared in the middle of the 19th Century – when all kinds of crazy things started happening – and Nietzsche prophesied the coming of the Übermensch.

It is not hard to see how this happened. We had merged with our machinery – and become much more than we had been previously. And this change in who we were was not imaginary – we had, in fact become much more – a whole new way of organizing our reality over large spaces. Railroad lines spanned the continents and steamship lines spanned the oceans. All held together by an enlarged sense of time – where everything was scheduled – to the minute!

Then something strange happened – this world fell apart – in WWI, the Depression, and WWII. This is when I appeared, in 1936 – completely baffled by what was going on.

But my parents were not baffled – they knew one thing, and knew it perfectly – that they were superhuman. And they hated humans – such as me.

This was puzzling, because they were, in fact, insignificant persons. There was a huge gap between what they thought they were – and what they actually were. And this gap continued to widen.

Let me summarize. We merged with our machines, became superhuman, and hated humans. Then wrecked on the rocks of reality, in the first half of the 20th Century. Without being aware of anything at all.

This cycle is now starting over with a new machine – the Computer. Which is spawning people who think they are superhuman, and who hate people. This time in strange places like Afghanistan. We haven’t hit the rocks of reality yet – but they are not far away.

And once again – we know nothing.
