These are: Software as an Industry, which is much like any other industry, and:
Software as a cooperative skill set – where its practitioners are mainly interested in making Software better, and in helping each other out.
The first kind was destructive – the second kind is constructive. And right now, they are locked in a huge struggle.
The history of Industrialization (a very complicated history) shows that it was not planned – it just happened. And after it happened, few were satisfied with its results. Every Business College in America, is urging Business to reform itself.
But Americans do not want reform.
This is a shocking statement, I know – but as far as I can see, it is a fact. Americans will say they want reform – but it’s easy to see that, in fact, they do not. And they have proved this by electing Trump.
What the heck is going on? Many things, but they all boil down to one thing – Americans have destroyed themselves.
This is not unusual – history is full of examples. Empires do not choose to fall – but they do. In the 20th Century, the British Empire fell, and the USSR fell. We cannot tell what will happen next, but the signs are not promising.
Will the Good win, or the Bad?
