The Shame of Los Angeles
LA was the prototype for all the unplanned urban megalopolises that now disgrace the world. If you have been to one of them, you have been to all of them.
But China and India, with their huge populations, now have the worst of them. Large cities have always been unhealthy places – but these are very unhealthy.
Los Angeles, however, is now cleaning up its act. It has the most stringent air pollution requirements for its cars in the world – and enforces them.
It is also getting culture – in a big way, with its Walt Disney Performance Center – designed to compete with the Lincoln Center in NYC. And its Philharmonic Orchestra can also compete favorably with New York’s.
It now has a facelift – and is not quite as disgraceful as before.
