Brain activity is too complicated for humans to decipher. Machines can decode it for us.
I can barely understand this – and I have worked at understanding Machine Learning. I can see, more then ever – that our technical expertise is vastly better than our social expertise.
These data scientists assume that psychiatrists know what schizophrenia is. They don’t, and they are well aware of this. And the data guys should realize this also.
They have made progress – great progress – in translating between languages. And are working on recognizing images – especially faces. All this is substantial scientific progress in using the Computer to do something people can do easily – and sometimes better than they can.
They are also working on understanding the brain – and are making some progress on this also.
People are making the Computer better – but it doesn’t work the other way. The Computer cannot make people better.
