Applying Ethics to Religion

This is a difficult subject, because it combines two difficult subjects Ethics and Religion – that no one wants to talk about.

Ethics (or Morality) insists there are moral standards that apply to all human behavior – including Religion.

Radical religious believers, in any religion – disagree strenuously.  And insist they are in contact with the ultimate truth – that overrides everything else.

And there are people in the middle, who try to understand everyone, and to not judge anyone, as completely right or wrong – but only crazy in various ways. My religious family would certainly fit in here – they believe in the Book of Mormon – that is nonsense dreamed up by Mormonism’s founder, Joseph Smith. This is crazy, but a kind of crazy that doesn’t hurt them very much.

This moderate approach is taken in The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry. I can relate to this, from my time in Silicon Valley, in the Nineties – a crazy place, if ever there was one. But, as they are eager to point out – loaded with money!
