The Global Arms Trade

TED – Samantha Nutt

Samantha is a doctor who has volunteered to serve in some of the worst places in the world. Where she has seen how cheap small arms are being used by child solders to kill innocent civilians, many of them women and children.

She is not trying to eliminate them, but only keep them under control. This led me to look at the Arms Trade Treaty in Wikipedia. The US has signed this, but not ratified it. And is not likely to do so. Americans love their guns, and don’t want them regulated.

They also like to sell them to other countries, because this trade is so profitable.

I am fortunate to live in rural Costa Rica, where guns are rare. And I don’t miss them.

How I found a mythical boiling river in the Amazon

This guy has a lot going for him – including this amazing, real discovery – complete with Shamans, and companies eager to cut down the rain forest that protects it.

I have seen the results of this myself, in Costa Rica – which has protected many of its rain forests – but left others completely unprotected. Going through one of these clear-cut areas is a depressing experience – and one tourists seldom see.

Enjoy the good sights, while you can.

Why We Need to Rethink Capitalism

This is my TED talk for the week. I cannot believe what good info there is in TED – in such an easy-to-digest format – videos that do not last for more then 20 minutes. There can be only one reason for this indifference – people do not want to be informed.

The majority of people, that is – but there is a minority that do want to be informed. And these are the people in the TED audiences – and the companies that sponsor TED.

There are not many of them – but if the Human Race has a future –  it will come from them.

And not from the Mass of the People.

How equal do we want the world to be? You’d be surprised

This talk is an excellent example of how much great information is out there – and how little most people are interested in it. There seems to be an ignorant majority – and a well-informed minority.

Which means Democracy cannot work – or at least, cannot work very well. And this jibes with what we can easily see every day, everywhere. The world is a mess. But no one wants to see this.

People may say “Yes, the world is a mess – but its not that much of a mess. We will pull out of this somehow.” But the most common situation is to say nothing at all –  while the world goes to hell.

To everyone’s quiet satisfaction.
